The voucher crowd calls for reinforcements. The professional activists parachute into Utah

The message is carefully crafted.

The press releases are sent to all the right media types.

The professional activists are flown in from out of state. They're staying at The Ritz. Where else?

Everything’s ready for another attack on them flippin’ anti-voucher educrats, spoilers of Our Man Milton's party.

Then ... well, I guess the stars just didn't line up for the good folks at The Sutherland Institute, Salt Lake City’s Fort Apache of conservative activism. (We can only hope the moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter aligns with Mars because that's when peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars.)

Rebeca Nieves Huffman (whose job is to travel the country persuading people vouchers and such are good for Hispanics), Rep. Jason “I’m a Democrat” Fields (whose job is to travel the country persuading people vouchers and such are good for African-Americans), and Clint Bolick (whose job is to sue NEAites if the likes of Nieves Huffman and Fields only persuade people vouchers and such are good for nothing) have parachuted into town at the invitation of Sutherland. However, the message meisters in Milwaukee have messed with their landing.

A study released Tuesday in Milwaukee suggests school choice isn’t such a powerful tool for driving educational improvement after all.

POW!

That’s gotta hurt.

WHAM!

It was produced by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, a conservative think tank that has supported school choice for almost two decades - when Milwaukee became the nation’s premier center for testing the experiment.

SAY IT AIN’T SO!

“We had expected to find a wellspring of hope that increased parental involvement in the Milwaukee Public Schools would be the key ingredient in improving student performance," wrote George Lightbourn, a senior fellow at the institute. But “there are realistic limits on the degree to which parental involvement can drive market-based reform.”

ET TU HOWARD?

One of the most ardent supporters of school choice in Milwaukee has backed away from advocacy of the purest version of the idea – in which there is little government oversight of schools and parental decisions in a free market dictate which schools thrive, according to Alan J. Borsuk writing in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Howard Fuller, head of the school-choice apologist group Black Alliance for Educational Options housed at something called the Institute for the Transformation of Learning at Marquette University in Milwaukee and an ally of Rep. Jason “I’m a Democrat” Fields, has changed his tune. He now believes that strong government oversight of voucher schools is needed, according to Borsuk’s report.

Asked whether the voucher program was leading to improvements in the achievement of students in Milwaukee, as was once expected, Fuller said: “I'm one of those people who believes that we may have oversold that point. . . . I think that any honest assessment would have to say that there hasn't been the deep, wholesale improvement in MPS (Milwaukee Public Schools) that we would have thought.”

Brother Bill,

The press conference is at 2pm...you are welcome to join us and ask our guests whatever you would like.

You continue to confuse Sutherland with other organizations. We lay it out there. If I would have known about the study by our friends in Wisconsin, I would have invited them too. I would like to hear them give the complete story. But, alas, we must enjoy the company we have while they're here.

Seriously, the press conference is at 2pm at our office...and I extend a personal invitation to you and your colleagues to join us for a private dinner at 7:30 at the office (although you must be polite and rsvp if you would like to join us).

Blogging is one thing...looking people in the eyes is quite another. Take my word for it, the latter approach is much more fun, lively, and...human.

I am quite sure our guests, especially Rep. Fields, would be happy to answer any question you have about his Democrat credentials and the ups and downs of Milwaukee's voucher program.

Best, PTM

And, btw, the irony just struck me...you take the word of a conservative, sister, Wisconsin think tank on its face...but not Sutherland's word. Perhaps you should examine their methodology, their motives, their donors, their biases on other issues, etc.

Ah, forget it...what they say leans your way. Why ask them questions?

Hope to have you join us for the press conference and private dinner. You will enjoy them.

(Oh, do you think your side would produce an honest, introspective, study of one of your ideas or policies? Just wondering.)

Are you calling the demos liars Paul?

To Dee...my sister, my only sibling, is mentally and physically handicapped. I am her legal guardian.

Why would you invoke such a rude comment?

Mr. Mero

The Wisconsin Policy Research Institute is not just "any other conservative think tank" when it comes to vouchers. I would think that if you were really in tuned to this issue and its long history you would realize that their conclusions yesterday were an atomic bomb to many of the false claims you and PCE keep making about the beneifts of vouchers.

That article and Howard Fuller's admissions are like Doug Holmes, Patrick Byrne, yourself and all the others in PCE clamoring for the deceipt in this voucher bill admitting that you realize your claims were faulty and then apologizing for your zealous efforts to pass them and the harm it has done to prevent a real constructive focus for school reform to be undertaken.

I guess you all better get busy with some damage control and make sure that WPRI information doesn't get out to bust your bubble on the good citizens that have swallowed your mis-information and distortions. Have a nice time tap dancing at your dinner this evening. Really !!

Dear gododgers,

Have you read the report? It has nothing to do with vouchers. It's about PUBLIC school choice.

Have a great day, PTM

BTW, Bill...how Democrat do you have to be to meet your standard?

Representative Jason Fields is a member of the Wisconsin House of Representatives, serving the 11th Assembly District. He is the former Chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, and vice-chairman of the Milwaukee County Democrats. In January of this year Rep. Fields was elected as the chair of the 19-member Democratic Milwaukee Delegation to the State Legislature.

We had a great time with him. I am sorry you did not accept my invitation to meet with him. He would have told you the truth about vouchers in Milwaukee. Oh well, I guess you'll just have to guess.

Best, PTM

Mr. Mero

It is about a lot of things, including public schools and how they have been impacted negatively by the voucher "experiment," and it debunks several of the common PCE claims about choice and vouchers--admit it!!! One thing is true and that is that Fuller is able to be more objective and honest than other ideologues pushing the entitlement for the wealthy to have their choice subsidized, so now maybe they can begin to get on with some real reform there. When will Utah be allowed to ? When will the dialogue start to be honest here and not about a special agenda of all of the elitist chameleons that think they know so much or pretend to?

I can't speak for anyone else Paul, but I think Dee meant, your sister conservative think tank, not your sister.

I could be wrong.

I think you are right. My bad. She (my real sister) has been on my mind lately.

My apologies for an uncomfortable comment.
